Protection for all: new Nissan NT400 Cabstar puts safety first

  • New standard features include Vehicle Dynamics Control, Brake Assist and Hill Assist
  • Low rolling resistance tyres for lower road noise and improved fuel efficiency
  • Design updates include new daytime running lights and front fog lights as standard

Nissan's passion for bringing advanced technology within reach of all drivers doesn't just apply to its cars. Six new safety systems and a series of design updates for the new Nissan NT400 Cabstar chassis cab show it is committed to introducing life-saving systems to its commercial vehicle line-up too.

Safety as standard

The NT400 Cabstar introduces a new and comprehensive safety equipment package that comfortably exceeds all mandatory EU regulations. ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) are now standard, as well as Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system, Traction Control System (TCS), Brake Assist System (BAS) and Hill Start Assist (HSA) as standard.

Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) - protection and stability in all conditions

The NT400 Cabstar's new Vehicle Dynamics Control combines two stabilising sub functions: Yaw Control (YC) and Roll Stability Program (RSP). Yaw Control monitors and corrects any unusual understeer or oversteer conditions while the Roll Stability Program intervenes by reducing the vehicle's speed when a rollover risk is detected.

Traction Control System (TCS)

This clever system uses Brake Control (BC) and Engine Control (EC) to prevent the spinning of driven wheels. By applying brake pressure and limiting engine torque, the TCS system improves stability and eliminates wheelspin on slippery road surfaces.

Brake Assist System (BAS)

By measuring the speed at which braking power is applied, BAS can detect if an emergency braking situation is happening. If this is the case, the front and rear traction control valves are energised to transform partial braking into full emergency braking.

Hill Start Assist (HSA)

Designed to make hill starts safer and more efficient, HSA holds braking pressure for two seconds if sensors detect that the vehicle is on an incline.

Design and specification updates

In addition to the safety and stability features, the new NT400 Cabstar also introduces daytime running lights (DTRL) that have been neatly incorporated into front fog lights which now become standard. Designed to offer increased visibility for other road users, the lights are illuminated as soon as the vehicle starts and switch off when low or main beam are selected.

The revised NT400 also introduces new six-stud wheel hubs (replacing the existing five-stud design) that offer even greater strength.

To meet EU homologation regulations, all NT400 Cabstar now feature low rolling resistance tyres as standard. In addition to improving the efficiency of the vehicle, they generate less road noise - further reducing its impact on the environment.

NT400 Cabstar goes from strength to strength

Built at Nissan's Avila production facility in Spain, the NT400 Cabstar chassis cab has earned itself a reputation for offering exceptional practicality, strength and low running costs for operators.

The YD25 four-cylinder 2,488cc common rail turbo diesel unit has a diesel particulate filter (complete with automatic or driver operated regeneration function), diesel oxidation catalyst, exhaust gas recirculation and on-board diagnostics to ensure it is fully Euro 5b+ compliant.

Available in single and double cab forms, the NT400 Cabstar can be specified with three different wheelbase lengths, five GVWs from 2.8t to 4.5t, and three power output options from the common rail 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine -

low (121hp/90kW, 250Nm), mid (136hp/100kw, 270Nm) and high (145hp/107kW, 350Nm).

Versatility remains one of the NT400 Cabstar's core strengths. It is available ex-factory with a choice of tipper, box and dropside bodies or as a chassis cab ready for conversions by specialists capable of installing an even wider variety of bodies on the vehicle.

To make the job of the specialist body builders as easy as possible, Nissan has equipped the NT400 Cabstar with a comprehensive array of connectors, electrical pre-equipment and warning lamps to enable a virtual ‘plug and go' operation.

"The improvements we have made not only make it a safer and even more pleasant place to be, but also significantly enhance the driving experience at the same time as reducing road noise and improving fuel efficiency" said Ponz Pandikuthira, Director of Light Commercial Vehicles in Europe.
