St. Petersburg, Russia – Nissan has announced the opening of a new office for the Russian subdivision of Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in St. Petersburg. The mission of the facility is the development of vehicles, as well as the implementation of technological innovations, for the Russian market.
Since 2005, Nissan's in-market engineers have made a significant contribution to the process of adapting Nissan vehicles to meet the demands of challenging Russian road and weather conditions.
From influencing vehicle design concepts, through to digital development and launching of targeted products into the market, NTCE-Russia has become crucial to securing the performance of Nissan vehicles. For example, the NTCE-Russia engineers implemented the ERA GLONASS system, and contributed to the development and adaptation of the popular Yandex.Avto system for Nissan X-Trail and Nissan Qashqai crossovers.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Nobusuke Tokura, senior vice president NTCE, said: “The opening of our new facility is testament to our ongoing commitment to the Russian market. The role of Research & Development is key to ensuring our vehicles are fit for the evolving needs of our Russian customers. We look forward to a bright future of innovation and the expansion of our NTCE capabilities with this new office.”
Located in the Primorsky district of St. Petersburg, close to the Nissan plant, the new two-storey 4,170 sq. m office features laboratories fitted with special equipment to carry out a wide range of validation and investigation work.120 highly skilled employees now work in this centre, with the facility offering the opportunity for expansion to accommodate 200 staff.
Alongside researching Russian customer preferences and developing the brand's Russia model line-up in accordance with its findings, the office will also be responsible for: localizing components and materials, increasing the capability and capacity of local suppliers, providing engineering support for the NMGR plant and monitoring the performance of vehicles already in production.

Nissan Technical Centre Europe's key milestones in Russia:
- 2005: Nissan Motor Russia hires its first three in-market engineers at its head office in Moscow.
- 2011: Nissan officially creates its first Russia subdivision of NTCE at Nissan Manufacturing Russia (NMGR) plant in St. Petersburg which was established two years earlier in 2009. By the end of the year, NTCE-Russia headcount between Moscow and St. Petersburg stands at 18 employees.
- 2018: Nissan officially opens a new NTCE-Russia office in the Primorsky district of St. Petersburg. Today the office hosts 120 employees with the opportunity to accommodate up to 200 staff in the future.
