• The Nissan LEAF becomes the first electric car to obtain recognition as Best Car in the Canary Islands, in the 20th Edition of the awards.
  • Fernando Clavijo, President of the Government of the Canary Islands, presented the award to Marco Toro, Managing Director of Nissan Iberia.
  • Nissan is the only brand to win the Best Car Award in the Canary Islands four times (Juke 2011, Pulsar 2014, Micra 2017 and LEAF 2019).

Canary Islands – The new Nissan LEAF has received the Award for the Best Car in the Canary Islands 2019, the first electric model to attain this level of recognition in Spain.

The Best Car prize consists of eight points of valuation – focusing on areas such as safety, design and aesthetics, innovation, technology and customer service. The judging panel, comprising of motoring specialists from the Canary archipelago, determined the Nissan LEAF was the most equipped to meet all customers’ needs.

Nissan is the only brand to have received this prestigious award four times in the Awards 20-year history, with the Nissan Juke in 2011, the Nissan Pulsar in 2014, the Nissan Micra in 2017 and now with the Nissan LEAF in 2019.

The Nissan LEAF is the icon of Nissan Intelligent Mobility and the first Nissan model to fully represent all three aspects of the company’s vision: Intelligent Power, Intelligent Driving and Intelligent Integration.

Marco Toro, Managing Director of Nissan Iberia, stated on receiving the honour: "This award is a recognition of drive and focus, the same with which the people at Nissan work every day to manufacture vehicles equipped with the latest technology, that are safer, and more comfortable while also meeting to the consumer expectation with a view to passing on zero emissions mobility to future generations."

Globally, Nissan has sold over 400,000 Nissan LEAFs since its launch in 2010 – a quarter of global industry-wide EV sales. A sales success, the Nissan LEAF was the most sold EV in 2018, and the best-selling EV in the history of Spain.

However, 100% zero emission electric mobility is about more than just cars as it also has a special impact on last mile urban deliveries resulting from the boom in e-commerce. In 2018, Nissan registered a 42% increase in the number of units registered of the of the made-in-Spain e-NV200 electric van.

Marco Toro believes that, "Zero emission electric mobility is the future to achieve more significant reductions of pollution in cities, as well as making the last mile delivery an absolutely clean and more efficient mode of transport."

In line with this, over the last year Nissan has been working in the Canary Islands to foster the dissemination and introduction of zero emission mobility.

Last January the company signed a collaboration agreement with the Island Council of Tenerife and the ITER for the development of sustainable mobility, in favour of the renovation of the current fleet (13.5 years old), to reduce emissions and to balance Tenerife's energy mix, integrating the LEAF into the distribution network thanks to its unique feature that allows it to be charged and discharged in the electricity grid.
